Life Fitness outfits Georgia Institute of Technology’s new campus recreation center

SCHILLER PARK, Ill. – Oct. 20, 2004 – Life Fitness, the leading manufacturer of a full line of cardiovascular and strength-training equipment, today announced it is the exclusive fitness equipment provider to the recently renovated Campus Recreation Center at The Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, one of the nation's top research universities.

“Universities realize that as the competition for prospective students intensifies, they need to have amenities such as fitness centers and recreation facilities for their students,” said Jay Megna, executive vice president, global sales, service and marketing, Life Fitness. “Life Fitness is the choice of many top-notch facilities because we offer premium, total fitness solutions.”

The renovation doubled the size of the Campus Recreation Center’s fitness area to more than 15,000 square feet. Life Fitness worked with the university to select a full complement of equipment that will provide a wide variety of exercises for the school’s 16,000-plus students and allow them to perform increasingly challenging workouts as they progress in their training.

The fitness center houses 61 cardio pieces including treadmills, total-body elliptical cross-trainers, Lifecycle exercise bikes and stairclimbers, all of which feature integrated LCD entertainment consoles that let users watch live TV programming while exercising. The more than 120-piece strength line-up includes units from the Cable Motion Series, Hammer Strength plate-loaded, Motion Technology Selectoried (MTS), bench and racks lines, Pro2 SE Series and Signature Series.

At the grand opening last month, Georgia Tech President G. Wayne Clough presented Life Fitness with a plaque acknowledging the company’s commitment to the university and to helping its students improve their health.

“Georgia Tech wants to work with the very best, and that is why we chose Life Fitness. It was quite obvious from the beginning that we were working with a group of professionals committed to the concept of a healthy lifestyle. Our students deserve the best and that is what they get with Life Fitness,” said Michael Edwards, director of campus recreation.

University recreation market

The National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association estimates that 400 U.S. universities are scheduled to build or renovate indoor recreational facilities at a cost of $4.3 billion over the next five years. University administrators recognize having a fitness facility in the recreation center is an essential tool for attracting prospective students to campus.

“More and more, universities are realizing that outfitting fitness centers requires more than placing some cardio pieces and few sets of free weights,” Megna said. “Recreation directors demand and expect their fitness equipment manufacturer provides a full range of equipment – including cardiovascular and strength equipment – and other services, such as facility layout support and training. Life Fitness delivers on universities’ needs because we have all these things in our arsenal.”

Life Fitness offers a full line of cardiovascular and strength products that are durable and reliable – capable of withstanding even the heavy use of university facilities that are open 17 hours a day. The company also consults on facility design and layout to help universities maximize space and ensure the equipment is positioned properly for safe and effective use.

In addition to Georgia Institute of Technology, Life Fitness is the fitness equipment provider to some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the country, including Smith College, Northampton, Mass., University of Chicago, University of Kansas, Lawrence, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and University of Washington, Seattle.

Georgia Institute of Technology Campus Recreation Center

The revamped $45 million Campus Recreation Center is an architectural marvel that incorporates the structure that housed part of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. Architects enclosed the aquatic center and added two floors above it, increasing the building’s indoor recreational space threefold, to approximately 300,000 square feet.

The facility also includes a newly enclosed Olympic-size swimming pool and diving well; a leisure pool with a 184-foot water slide, current channel, hot tub and sun patio; a three-story climbing wall; a café that overlooks the leisure pool; six basketball courts; exercise studios; a roller hockey rink and an elevated jogging track.
