The Life Fitness Academy announces research grant winners

$20,000 given to support advancement of research in exercise science

SCHILLER PARK, Ill. – June 24, 2004 – The Life Fitness Academy, the training and education department of Life Fitness, has announced the winners of the 2004 Life Fitness Academy Michael L. Pollock Memorial Grants. This year’s recipients were announced at a Life Fitness Academy meeting during the recent American College of Sports Medicine Annual Conference in Indianapolis.

“Once again, it’s an honor for the Life Fitness Academy to present grants to support worthy research,” said Christine “CC” Cunningham MS, ATC/L, CSCS, fitness education manager, Life Fitness. “This year’s winners were selected based on their research proposals’ scientific merit and the studies’ potential for contributing to the field of fitness and exercise. We look forward to seeing the results.”

The following graduate students and post-doctorate fellows each will receive a $5,000 grant toward their research projects:

***Scott Collier, Syracuse University, New York, who will compare the mechanisms of post exercise hypotension following acute aerobic and resistance exercises;

***Steriani Elavsky, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, who will address physical activity and quality of life during menopause;

***Matthew Harber, Ph.D., University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, who will study resistance training and the expression of metabolic factors in young and older men and women; and

***Patrick Korebein, M.D., University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Little Rock, who will examine the effects of resistance exercises on prostate cancer, especially on muscle and quality of life.

Members of the Life Fitness Academy’s Scientific and Medical Advisory Board, which comprises 30 of the country’s most renowned professionals in exercise science and sports medicine, selected the grant recipients. Every year, the Life Fitness Academy awards $20,000 in grants to graduate students and post-doctorate fellows to assist the advancement of research in exercise science. The grants support applied human studies on the effects of physical activity on various health states, such as arthritis, asthma, cancer, back injury, depression, diabetes, eating disorders, hypertension, menopause, obesity, osteoporosis, stroke and visual impairment.

Since its formation in 1993, the Life Fitness Academy has awarded $220,000 to 63 grant winners, including this year’s recipients.
