Life Fitness Academy announces 2003 research grant winners |
Awards mark decade of supporting exercise science research
FRANKLIN PARK, Ill. – June 11, 2003 – The Life Fitness Academy (LFA), the training, research and education organization started by Life Fitness, has announced the winners of the 2003 Life Fitness Academy Michael L. Pollock Memorial Grants. The recipients recently were named at the LFA’s Scientific & Medical Advisory Board meeting during the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Annual Conference in San Francisco.
“With these grants, the Life Fitness Academy marks its 10th year of honoring individuals whose research defines the cutting edge of exercise science,” said Greg Bahnfleth, training and education manager, Life Fitness Academy. “We are pleased to provide continuing support for these important studies.”
The Life Fitness Academy annually awards $20,000 in grants to graduate students and post-doctoral faculty members. The grants support applied human studies focusing on the effects of physical activity on various health states, such as anorexia, arthritis, asthma, back injury, cancer, depression, diabetes, hypertension, menopause, obesity, osteoporosis, stroke and visual impairment.
The Scientific & Medical Advisory Board members, who are 30 renowned professionals in exercise science and sports medicine, choose the Michael L. Pollock Memorial grant recipients. Since its formation in 1993, the LFA has awarded $200,000 to 59 grant winners, including this year’s recipients.
Graduate Grant Winners
The following graduate students received grants of $2,500 each for their projects:
- Tracy Baynard, Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York, who will study the effect of single versus multiple bouts of exercise on autonomic function in Type 2 diabetic individuals;
Christopher R. Mohr, University of Pittsburgh, who will investigate the effect of weight loss combined with exercise on change in bone health in overweight women;
Steven J. Prior, University of Maryland, College Park, who will look at genetic aspects of maximal oxygen consumption; and
Carrie G. Sharoff, University of Massachusetts Amherst, who will examine the dose-response relationship between exercise volume and insulin sensitivity.
Post-Doctoral Faculty Grant Winners:
The LFA also awarded two $5,000 post-doctoral faculty grants t
- Joey C. Eisenmann, Ph.D., York University, Toronto, Ontario, who will focus on the relationship between adolescent physical activity and fitness and adult cardiovascular disease risk factors; and
Steven E. Riechman, Ph.D., M.P.H., Kent State University, Kent, Ohio, who will research exercise-induced skeletal muscle production and the release of interleukin-15 into the interstitial space.
Winners’ Recognition
The winners will be recognized for their achievements and have the opportunity to present their research at the Scientific & Medical Advisory Board’s annual dinner to be held next June during the 2004 ACSM Annual Meeting in Indianapolis.
